While manga can be beneficial for language study in many obvious and non-obvious ways, they cannot be relied on to the point of excluding other learning tools, and they can be used in the wrong way.

* using individual manga panels as examples of grammatical explanations, as is often done in books proclaiming to teach Japanese through manga, is problematic in the sense that it adds very little value to 'traditional' use of example phrases. While the visual nature of the medium does render a page more attractive, a single manga panel amounts to little more than an example phrase with a picture slapped on it. It can be questioned if this can actually be called 'learning Japanese through manga'.
